The rise in body based problems from eating disorders to cutting, question conventional theory on the relationship of Body and Mind. Dr. Orbach will outline her new understandings of the development of the body and discuss the implications for practice where powerful body countertransferences can occur. Reading Dr. Orbach's book, entitled Bodies, in advance will be helpful to participants.

Presenter: Dr. Susie Orbach is a psychoanalyst and writer. Her interests include, the construction of femininity and gender, globalization & body image, emotional literacy and psychoanalysis & the public sphere. She co-founded The Women’s Therapy Centre in London in 1976 and The Women’s Therapy Centre Institute, New York in 1981. Her numerous publications include Fat is a Feminist Issue, Hunger Strike, What Do Women Want (with Luise Eichenbaum), The Impossibility of Sex and her latest book Bodies. Susie has recently co-edited Fifty Shades of Feminism (2013).

Dr. Orbach has been a consultant to the World Bank, the NHS and Unilever. She is a founder member of Psychotherapists and Counsellors for Social Responsibility, convenor of Endangered Bodies (www.london.endangeredbodies.org) the organisation campaigning against body hatred. She is an expert member of the steering group of the British government’s Campaign for Body Confidence.

She has a practice seeing individuals and couples.
